Dear Parent/Guardian:
Parents are receiving a letter to provide information about changes that have been made to our math curriculum effective with the 2022-2023 school year. In an effort to strengthen mathematical understanding, our math team has met and worked cooperatively to provide multiple math pathways for all our students. The primary change is implementing Algebra 1 to be taught over two years instead of the traditional one-year course. The letter includes a diagram of the pathways students may take to complete the four math credits required for graduation.
The purpose of these changes are:
to provide a deeper understanding of Algebra 1 through a slower pace allowing time for intervention as needed
to allow an additional year for the student to be developmentally prepared for the abstract thinking that an Algebra 2 course requires
to offer all students a chance to be successful in college preparatory math classes
to ensure that students seeking trade certifications or associate degrees have necessary mathematical skills to succeed in those programs
to increase the rigor in Geometry and Algebra 2
I am excited about the opportunities this change will provide for all of our students. I realize that change can bring questions and concerns, and hope that you will attend the informational meeting to be held Thursday, May 19, 2022, at 5:30 PM in the high school cafeteria.
Sincerely,
Nathan M Sullivan
